MRI

  • Oral Contrast for MRI Small Bowel (IV contrast study)

    Oral contrast is required for these examinations and it will be provided at our centre. Patient arrives at our centre and will start taking oral contrast solution 1 hour before the actual scan. Arrival time will be given by our staff member.


    Side effects of the oral contrast materials, includes stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea etc.


    Old films and report should be brought along at the time of examination.


    Oxygen supply is available at additional charges, please contact our staff for details.

  • MRI Cholangiopancreatoqraphy

    Fasting for 6 hours prior to the examination, including water.


    Old films and report should be brought along at the time of examination.

  • MRI Contrast Studies

    Pacemakers / ICD - iRad does not offer MR scanning for patient with these devices:

           1. Standard cardiac pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD)

           2. MRI compatible pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD)


    Because of the strong, static magnetic field in the scanning room can have adverse effects on certain patients. Please alert our staff if one or more of the following items applicable to the patient. Our medical staff will notify if patient can have MRI scan as soon as possible:

    -Pacemaker                       -Prosthesis (glass eyes, e.g. ocular prosthesis)

    -Aneurysm Clips               -Tattoo and permanent cosmetics

    -Vascular Stent                  -Dentures

    -Metallic implants              -Intra-uterine devices (IUD)

    -Metallic foreign body      -Other metal objects


    Please notify our staff if the patient is pregnant or suspect she is pregnant.


    If the patient is uncomfortable with confined space (claustrophobic), referral doctor should prescribe a sedative for the patient.


    Fasting for at least 4 hours prior to the examination, may take small sips of water. (For Upper Abdomen or Whole Abdomen Only.)


    Patient may take other regular medications as usual.


    If patient is over the age of 65 or have Renal Insufficiency and will be receiving IV contrast, he/she must have a Creatinine/RFT drawn within 30 days prior to the exam. Please kindly arrange this lab test for the patient and write down the result on the referral form.


    Please notify our staff 48 hours before scheduled appointment if patient is suffering from kidney diseases, diabetes, asthma or other respiratory diseases, serious allergy reaction or special assistance is needed.


    Allergic History  

    If patient has previous allergy reaction and referring doctor decided Oral Steroid Pre-medication (Prednisolone) is required, it should be prescribed by referring doctor the day preceding the examination.


    If pre-medication is required and it has been prescribed:

    Oral pre-medication to be given 12 hours and 2 hours prior to the MRI scan.


    Patient should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, avoiding jewelry, metals snaps and zippers.


    Old films and reports should be brought along at the time of examination.

  • Plain Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI Scan

    Pacemakers / ICD - iRad does not offer MR scanning for patient with these devices:

Exam Preparations

CT

  • Coronary Angiogram

    Fasting for at least 4 hours prior to the examination, may take small sips of water.


     

    Our nursing staff will contact patient one day preceding the scan regarding preparation of the scan.


     

    Patient may take regular medications as usual except anti-hypertensive drugs.


      

    Patient with Diabetes: DO NOT take oral diabetes medications (i.e. Glucophage, Metformin etc.) on the day of CT scan.  Metformin can be restarted 48 hours after the administration of the contrast agent.


     

    If patient is over the age of 65 or have Renal Insufficiency and will be receiving IV contrast, he/she must have a Creatinine drawn within 30 days prior to the exam. Please kindly arrange this lab test for the patient and write down the result on the referral form.

           - Caffeinated soft drinks, coffee, tea or even de-caf tea or coffee

           - Cigarettes and alcohol

           - Flu medicines or pain-killer which contain caffeine

           - Oral Medication for erectile dysfunction: Viagra or Levitra, etc.


     

    Please notify our staff if the patient is pregnant or suspect she is pregnant.


     

    Old films and reports should be brought along at the time of examination.


     

    Upon arrival, patient’s heart rate will be monitored before the scan. In order to optimize the images quality and easier to interpret, slow and steady heartbeat are required. If patient’s heart rate is fast and irregular, medicine will be served orally. This medicine requires at least half an hour to take effect.


     

    The length of the whole procedure (including all preparations and the actual scan) depends on patient’s heart rate. Please expected that patient will be staying at our centre for 1-2 hours.

  • Computed Tomography Intravenous CT IV / Oral Contrast Study

    Fasting for at least 4 hours prior to the examination, may take small sips of water.


    Patient may take other regular medications as usual.

    Having a full bladder is essential for these examinations, patient is required to drink plenty of water 30 minutes prior to the examination.

  • Ultrasound of Pelvis (TA) / Prostate (TA) / Urinary Bladder

    30-minute prior to examination, drink a lot of water to have a full bladder.

  • Ultrasound of Upper Abdomen

    Fasting for 6 hours prior to examination.  May continue usual medication with sips of water.

  • Ultrasound of Upper Abdomen + Pelvis

    Fasting for 6 hours prior to examination.


    30-minute prior to examination, drink a lot of water to have a full bladder.

    Avoid any deodorant, lotion and powder prior to examination.


    Please notify our staff 48 hours before scheduled appointment if patient is allergy to local anesthesia, or special assistance is needed.


    Please notify our staff ONE WEEK before scheduled appointment if patient is taking blood thinner such as Aspirin, Warfarin, or Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug e.g., Ibuprofen.


    Patient should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.


    Please notify our staff if the patient is pregnant or suspect she is pregnant.


    Old films and report should be brought along at the time of examination.


    Please avoid strenuous exercise after the procedure.
